A struggle between a meat life and vegan/vegetarian.

I am not a vegan or vegetarian. I want to be and I was for 2.5 years. I actually think eating meat is ok, and hunting your meat is even better. Would I be able to kill an animal with a gun, bow or knife? Probably not. I don’t think all humans should be vegan but I personally would like to outweigh some of the demand. I believe our society eats way too much meat and the demand that we place on the farmers has forced the process to be streamlined to unsafe measures for the animals and for the environment. The amount of waste produced from one chicken lot or one feed lot is unbelievable. The effects of this waste is easily seen in our water quality. Ever heard of eutrophication? In simple terms, one of the causes is from animal waste (feed lots) entering our water sources when it rains causing an over abundance of nutrients. This over abundance causes a bloom of phytoplankton in the water which takes up all of the oxygen. Fish need oxygen so many times it results in a huge die off of fish and other animals. That is just one example of the water quality issues intense farming of animals creates.

But like I said, I eat meat. I am a hypocrite. I have a reason. Since I was 12 years old I have had health issues. I went to doctors and they told me one thing or anther and I always thought I was on the right track to getting better but I never got better. I got worse. After 13 years, lots of pain and misery, 5 colonoscopies, an endoscopy and sigmoidoscopy I got an accurate diagnosis. Finally at age 25 I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis. I then went through the drug stage. Doctors put me on several different steroids and drugs. I didn’t respond well to them and went through all the side effects of steroids. 2.5 years of drugs and still horrible. The next treatment was called remicade. That’s right remicade, a drug that has to be given as an intravenous drip with monster side effects. I was shocked and scared at the thought of sitting in a hospital getting a drip and feeling even worse. At this point I had it. I was sick of doctors passing each drug onto me and figured there must be some other way. I then did one of the things I think I do best… Research. I went to the book store, libraries and searched the web. I started reading all kinds of information and found that there was a diet that seemed to work for hundreds of people! I thought if it can work for them, it can work for me. So I bought the book, printed out my can and can not eat list and unloaded my apartment of all the NO list.

The diet is hard. No carbs. Which means, no rice, no pasta, no beans, no sugar, no oats, no soy, no potatoes, no nuts. Basically you are starving out the bacteria that breaks down discacharides forcing their numbers to decline. I won’t bore you with more of the details, if you are interested or know someone that has stomach issues (Chron’s, celiac, diverticulitis and many more) I highly suggest this book and website, it saved my life. www.breakingtheviciouscycle.info

The book suggests you go on the diet for one year and then try adding things back in. I did the strict diet for one month back in March of 2009. I read the backs of all my food items and didn’t touch it if there was a hint of any sugar. I basically ate plain white chicken and beef and spaghetti squash and some other veggies. Let me tell you as a gal growing up with bread everyday and a fond love of rice and pasta, this was hard. Especially in the beginning the feeling of full is much different (or nonexistent) than a full from carbs. You don’t get that euphoric happy blood pulsing full. But I did wean myself off of all medicine and can control it all through diet, just as thousands of others have too. Another must know about website: Adam’s website. But how many more suffer through the hospitals still?

So what can I do?

  • I make the best decisions I can on the kind of meat I do buy, within my budget. I try for 100% grass fed beef and all natural organic chicken. Many times companies can place grass fed on the label but in reality they are started on a grass pasture and transitioned to the feed lot to finish. Honestly the “simple truth” brand from Kroger has helped make life a bit easier as it isn’t ridiculously expensive. But as they say, you pay a larger price now or you pay your health bills later. Either way you pay!
  • Sustainable seafood – There are some kinds of seafood that is better to purchase than others due to overfishing, bycatch, habitat destruction from fishing methods and farming. The Monterrey Bay Aquarium in California has gathered tons of information on the fishing industries and put together a Seafood Watch Guide. The guide can be downloaded from the internet or even better you can download the free app on your smartphone!
  • Make up and other beauty products. I use the cruelty list from PETA to find companies that are not testing on animals. Peta list. I was recently enlightened about the question of companies of which their final products are not tested on animals but their individual ingredients are. Making it nearly impossible to find a company that is truly cruelty free. UGH! Does every company have to get around everything?! But non the less I value PETA as extremists and being extremists comes with a passion to fight the companies that they believe are harmful to animals. So for now, I will continue to use and value their list.
  • I don’t buy animal fur or leather materials. With all of the synthetics out there I find it easy to stay away! Although I wouldn’t be surprised if companies sneaked in animal parts to my shoes or other clothing. But the synthetics come at a price as well… they are mostly made from petroleum products… OIL! So what is worse?

This is also to say, as most, I do make mistakes. It’s not about being perfect, it’s about trying to do the best you can with what you have and being conscious of the problems. I am a firm believer in every little bit counts. If we all made a few decisions differently we would collectively make a large difference. So maybe your way is, you buy one package of chicken a week or month that is organic, you only buy organic eggs, you are a vegetarian, or you do meatless Mondays. You make your own decision.

So there it is… My most honest post. This is something that eats me alive daily. After the 30 day strict diet I have been able to add a few items back into my diet and have survived almost 4 years just with an altered diet (mainly no rice, pasta, lettuce or beans). But I cheat, and for the past few months I have cheated way to much landing me with many days hugging the porcelain thrown. So I have decided to again do the strict diet for 30 days. As I enter only my third day of no carbs/sugar and my body begs and pleads for just a taste, I am reminded heavily of my emotional battle. This post refreshes me and will probably be something I come back to read when I am “dying” for some chocolate or bread!

Honest.

A weekend full of my friends.

If you have never looked into renting a Vacation Rental By Owner (vrbo.com) I highly recommend it. My friends and I rented a house for the weekend full of all the comforts of home plus more. Great idea for families with kids because they are fully equipped with pots and pans, washer/dryer, lotions/soaps and have multiple beds! It is definitely a step up from the back of the truck that David and I usually sleep in while traveling! But I’ve stayed in several other VRBO’s and loved them all. Cheaper than a hotel room and much more to offer. A close walk to several tourist spots as well. Because of the ability to eat in, the fully stocked VRBO is definitely better than a hotel health wise, budget wise and green wise!

But anyway, I was lucky enough for my friends to make a long drive with their kids to all have a weekend together. We explored a bit of Fort Worth on our adventure and chilled at the house the rest of the time. When the babies sleep the mommies play!

We all have a love of the movie Elf fostered by our days bundled up together watching the film over and over. Kaitlyn surprised us with our own narwhal shirts from the movie!! Take a peek:

It was awesome to catch up with great friends and have a mini get-a-way!

I love getting together with great friends because it always feels like we saw each other just the day before even though it’s been more like months! And the best part, they are always up for an adventure!!

Till the next time mi amigas!

Oh and the answer to last post:
The kitty that came to the office last Friday was an African serval! Servals live in North Africa and one of their ways of dodging predators is jumping in random directions to cause confusion. Just looking at its body you can see how agile they are. The average weight is about 30 pounds but they are known for their long legs and neck. They are listed as a species of least concern by the IUCN but the US Fish and Wildlife lists a subspecies as endangered. The cause of their decline is habitat loss and the pet trade. More and more people in this world causes more demand on our earth forcing wildlife habitat to be destroyed by urbanization and agriculture.

That cute serval is now part of our outreach department and will meet people of all ages through presentations on grounds at the zoo and off site. She is a great ambassador for wildlife and will create a connection to animals with everyone that lays eyes on her. I know for me she definitely inspired me to learn more about servals!

Guess who visited the office today!?

Back at work today and spent the day presenting programs at a school offsite. Early morning, long day and feeling exhausted!

Came back to the office for a bit in the afternoon and had an animal visitor. I want to tell you more about the animal but I think you should guess what it is first! No cheating and googling! I always ask the kids and adults during my presentations to guess the animals they see so why shouldn’t you. Take a stab at it! I’ll post a blog soon with the answer.

Day two of marine adventures!

I was unsure if anything could surpass day one at Seaworld San Antonio but day two had so much to offer as well! The morning call wasn’t so early and started with a few presentations during breakfast. We heard from the Seaworld San Antonio social media team about unique ways to engage your fans and capitalize on your investment in a few social media sites. I have always been a firm promoter in the far reach of social media and these guys displayed several examples and real numbers to illustrate how successful social media is. Some main points for social media contact: Cute kills and pictures are worth a thousand words.

We then heard from one of the animal curators at the park that was a trainer with most of the animals and now along with his role at Seaworld is an actor and a San Antonio Spurs announcer! He was full of personality and oozing positivity as he spoke about the Whale Done philosophy of managing people. Whale Done is a book inspired by a visit to Seaworld. The animal training inspired the author to take a look at positive reinforcement and how it could relate to people as well. If it works for whales it will work for humans. This will be a book I definitely order and read. I’ve heard about It before but was never inspired to actually purchase. After being engaged by the fabulous speaker, I was hooked with a desire to learn more.

Next up, some animal time. After sitting in a room for a bit it was time to visit the sea lions! We also had the opportunity to chat with their completely inspiring trainers that are enthusiastic about their animals and roles in their lives. All of the trainers we interacted with had the same passion and it showed. Not to mention, we did get to pet a sea lion and do some behaviors with them. My behavior was fitting…. Dancing!

The afternoon was filled with a fascinating talk on reproduction and artificial insemination of marine mammals. It’s great to have that insider knowledge to pull on whenever I need it.

We also had a visit from a penguin ambassador and saw their indoor 27 degree exhibit. This is penguin breeding season so the four species (King, chin strapped, rockhoppers, gentu) were busy laying eggs and incubating. In the same exhibit hall they had puffins! One of my favorites.

Lastly we had some round tables to discuss concerns/issues/ideas at each of our facilities and give people a chance to talk with others in the same field.

Sea World were awesome hosts of TAZE but it’s not over yet! We are headed to the San Antonio Zoo today!!

A Sea World Adventure

Monday night I wrapped up work and headed down to San Antonio with my Dallas Zoo coworkers for the Texas Aquarium and Zoo Educators (TAZE) conference. The annual conference is held in a different location each year and is a chance for networking, learning new programs, presentations from professionals in the field, discussing issues in the field and reviving our inspiration for the work we do.

We started yesterday with a fabulous introduction to Sea World with a 6:30am arrival time we were ready for some behind the scenes activities. Groups split off and we headed for the beluga whale and pacific white sided dolphin areas. We helped prep their fish for the day, part of a total 3500 pounds of fish fed out to their animals every day. Imagine that bill!!

After helping prep their fish we learned more about the individual animals and got a chance to view several training sessions. I was highly impressed with their training program. The trainers must first pass a very rigorous swim test before even a chance to interview. The swim test is in 60 degree water and is an underwater 110 feet swim, freestyle two lengths of the pool in under a certain time, be able to pull yourself out of the pool, dive off the bridge and lastly tread water for five minutes. I thought the only thing I could possibly do would be the tread water for five minutes until they said you must hold your hands over your head while treading water. Count me out on that one too.

The animal trainers are a team of 21 in the beluga/dolphin area that constantly throughout the day are working on several husbandry and enriching behaviors with all of the animals. They train a session and then group up to discuss what happened in the session and then are back to it. The animals love the activity and they rotate through animals sometimes focusing on one and other times working as a group. Watching the different personalities was fun and my heart obviously is drawn to the younger ones that are mischievous in their demeanor.

The park is currently closed until February so we had a unique opportunity to have the park to ourselves and see what happens in this off time. When the park is open in the midst of their training sessions they also perform live shows but are not scared or hesitant to cancel a show for the animal’s welfare.

Here are a few pics from the morning experience:

After a fabulous morning you would think nothing could top that. Well, the day only got better. We continued are day with several talks that all included a heavy conservation message which was happy to hear so much of their mission is conservation and it is followed up in several unique ways. We also had a chance to visit their stingray pool full of rays you can feed and touch. This is where I learned how to easily tell the difference between males and females… The same way you do in sharks, look for clasps (finger like projections) near their cloaca and if you see them it’s a male. No clasps then a female.

Our last interaction was dolphin cove. An open tank of bottle nosed dolphins you can feed, touch, get splashed by or just watch up close and personal. Because the park was empty we had the place all to ourselves. Had there been lots of people there I don’t think I would have gone over to the area but with a small group I felt it was appropriate. It was a blast! We all got wet and acted like kids begging for more fish to feed out. The excitement was everywhere.

Lastly we were treated to a catered dinner in a shocking and breathtaking aquarium room. The picture does not do the two tanks justice as they are 300,000 and 400,000 gallons of water!! Eleven inches of glass separated us from sharks, eagle rays and many more species.

What a great day.
One more thing: Tom and I are making a video blog of this trip. As if the trip wasn’t fun enough, but give us a video camera and the fun increases 10 fold! We are having a blast narrating and recording our adventures in our own mini wildlife show. I can’t wait to get back and turn it into a smashing video. So stay tuned!!

Ok I’m off to day two. Who knows what’s to come?!? Shamu? Penguins? Oh and more conference materials too 🙂

Love marine life.

Before I die, I want to…

20130120-215612.jpg
This weekend was fabulous weather here in Dallas and of course the sunny and 65 degrees begs me to get outside. We explored White Rock Lake with my family on Saturday and Sunday set off to find out what this Katy trail in Dallas is all about.

20130120-224229.jpg
The Katy trail is a spectacular paved and rubber pathway that empties into downtown dallas. What a great way to get to the city! And with weather like today there were tons of people enjoying the trail walking, running, biking, roller blading, chatting, dining and treating their dog to the outdoors. Today I felt like I was back on the east coast where trails like these are the norm. To top it off we grabbed a bite to eat trail side on a fabulous outdoor patio.

The “before i die, i want to” picture above is from the side of a building along the Katy trail. There was no chalk for me to add my thoughts in but it still got me thinking. Before I die, I want to… I suppose I should start a bucket list. I’ve always had things I’ve wanted to do but never wrote them down. What would you want to do? Off the top of my head here are some of mine:
1- visit South Africa
2- visit brazil/Argentina
3- own my own business. (I’ve got a few ideas here).
4- I like the one in the picture… Hike Machu Picchu. That would be an adventure!
5- grow my own large garden and do a garden diet. I know someone that ate only things that grew in their valley for 6 weeks. How awesome would that be!
6- commit to a large challenge of resources. Such as not purchasing anything new for an entire year. No waste for a year. (No bags, no packaging, no new clothes)
7- do an adventure race. (Kayak, climb, run, camp).
8- work for national geographic (or make it into their magazine).
9- sail for a month.
10- horseback riding camping trip with my mommasita.
11- backpack Yellowstone.
12- visit Denali – when its warm. 🙂
13- backpack Europe.
14- snorkel the Great Barrier Reef

Ok I could go on forever. But we all should. We all should have dreams and bucket lists that go on and on. The more I think about it the more that comes to mind.

Our time is short and although I’ve done a lot in my years I think I’ve got to push the gas pedal a bit more. Today I think life is more about the adventures than anything else!

My nephew Anis is just starting to build his bucket list. I bet two things would surely be on there: 1- ride every tractor/firetruck/rocketship as humanly possible and 2- watch every video ever made involving tractors/firetrucks.

I guess everyone has their interests!! His happiness is contagious… You can’t help but smile when you see this picture:

20130120-223032.jpg

It’s never too early or too late to start your bucket list. And it’s yours so you can add/delete as you want. I know I will be adding to mine!!

Bucket list.

A few hours at The Perot.

The Dallas Zoo Education Department took a field trip to the new Perot Museum of Nature and Science in downtown Dallas for a little inspiration. The museum was previously at Fair Park which is maybe six miles down the road from downtown. The new building itself is an exhibit with lots of unique features and the highly anticipated escalator up the side of the building.

I was excited for all of us to take a peak and build some enthusiasm. We explored for only about two hours but I left with some good feelings. Overall i felt the museum inspires people to be curious and excited about science. They have multiple different exhibit halls from rocks and minerals, dinosaurs and bones, a sound lab, the natural world, the universe, sports hall, birds, water and on and on. The exhibit halls are magnificent, unique, intricate and have many hands on manipulatives. One of the things I really liked was in each exhibit hall they had videos from scientists in the field discussing their careers. Not many people watched the videos with all of the other things to explore but I could havd watched all of them and been happy! I wonder if they have the videos online?

Another one of my favorites was the fly like a bird. Located on the very top floor you can digitally become a bird. Put on some 3D glasses and start flapping and gliding as you fly through trees, landscapes and the sky displayed on a huge screen in front you. Kids were waiting in line for this because it was so “fly”! Of course I waited my turn with those kiddos to get a piece of the action. Well worth the wait.

The one exhibit I was perplexed by was the oil exploration exhibit. The spin they put on fracking is disheartening. Watch the documentary Gashole and you will understand fracking is not the answer to all our problems, instead it causes more problems. Ok but I’ll stay positive…

The museum has a lot to offer and their classroom spaces are to die for and I know students will be inspired just entering those spaces.

On this quick trip to the museum I learned things I didn’t know and gained some resources I know I will pull on. As I’ve mentioned before my mind works the same for my job as it does for cooking recipes. If I want to make a particular meal I will research the many recipes and different ways to prepare the dish and then knowing the general idea I will create my own version with some added creativity. I find the more I know the more I can pull on when I need it. And of course the more I write down and take notes the more I remember. So you usually always see me with a notebook or my phone taking notes and pictures. Love it.

I highly encourage you to make it to the museum. Take your kids because there is lots for kids of all ages and plenty to feed your adult brain too. Oh and I forgot to mention the children’s museum on the bottom floor. Lots of fun! Plan on spending at least 2 hours and realize you could go through for days and still not see and do everything.

Also what’s fabulous… You can take the train to get there! Get off at Akard station downtown and you are a short walk away!

Learn more and find out prices on their website: www.perotmuseum.org

Check out some pics from the short trip including some of my education peeps and me being a weatherlady leading us through the week’s weather!

A short trip to Austin.

Last Thursday/Friday I took a short trip to Austin for a one day meeting. I’ve only been to Austin one other time and it was for a very memorable New Year’s Eve celebration with some of my besties. I was excited to return but knew this was not going to be anything like my previous trip.

This short trip did spark my enthusiasm for travel again. I’ve been busy settling in at my job and house that we haven’t done much traveling and as part of my new years resolution, I’m ready! The fabulous news is Austin is only 3 hours from my house. Holla! That means return trips will occur.

The trip and meeting was a great reminder that Texas has a lot to offer in the vastness and diversity of habitats. But what the trip made even more apparent to me is that there is an entire country out there and even more an entire world. Living in Texas comes with the Texcentric challenges. Texas views everything through Texas eyes (How does it effect Texas, or we have that it in Texas, or lets make Texas the best etc.). I usually can enjoy the state pride but lately it’s just a bit too much for me. Hey Texas, how can we help in making our country better? Not just ourselves.

Anyway, I was able to meet up with a good friend from graduate school and do a bit of reminiscing of all of our crazy adventures through Palo Duro Canyon all in the name of research on ringtails. Good times. Also stopped at the Capitol and attended my meeting. Learned a bit and then turned for home. I desperately wanted to stay in Austin for the weekend but my family was awaiting my return.

Some pics of my exploring! Yes while driving. Yes there was insane traffic and one ways. And yes Austin has the most homeless people I have ever seen. More than NYC for sure. There is lots more to see in Austin and lots more to help out and do.

I look forward to another trip down soooon. But next time I’m taking my car. My car is in need of a visit to the shop so my trip to Austin lacked being green in the gas guzzling truck.

I have been re bitten by the traveling bug and this bites a itchin!
